They made their way out into the courtyard and saw the remains of the battlefield. Dwarvarr golems stood in the courtyard, and towering above them were the two mech-frames. The ground was cracked and the bodies of Rzan and Elvarr were everywhere.

“Ho there, friends!” the Dwarvarr envoy, Gurndig Blackrock the Third, yelled out. He held an axe in one hand engraved with spellscripts and stood on the shoulder of one of his people’s golems.

“Gurndig,” Kane greeted as he walked over.

“Well if this aint’ae damned thing. These lizards sure are bold. Attacking a city during a peaceful summit. And the Elvarr betraying their own kind… We Dwarvarr might not like each other all that much, but betraying our own? Never gonna happen.”

“What are you going to do?” Kane asked.

“I reckon we take our people and leave the city. We don’t have enough golems to help in the fighting, not on this scale. I assume you’re gonna stay and fight?”

“We are,” Kane said.

“Well, you might be able to help.” The Dwarvarr glanced at the mech-frames. “Those things are insane. Once my people learn about them, we’ll want to learn how you made ‘em.”

“We’ll talk after,” Kane said as a group of red guards exited one of the buildings, marching in formation. They slowed as they noticed them, but upon seeing Vilariarin they saluted and continued toward the elevators.

Gurndig grunted, then waved with his axe. “Well, we should catch that ride. Don’t want to get stuck in the city on siege.”

Kane wanted to ask him to stay—their golems might not be mech-frames, but they looked fierce and could be of help—but he knew that they had no responsibility to protect this city. He walked over to the mech-frames, and over the comms he gave out orders to Erika and Imari. Artemis knelt and Kane hopped on her hand before climbing up her shoulders as the guards and the Darkstone envoys boarded the elevator. Remi and Vilariarin got on Imari’s Orion, and the two mechs took to the air, Emma and Dario following.

Going over the edge and seeing the city, Kane cursed as he saw the army in front of the northern wall. There were at least a few tens of thousands of them, and they were entering the city through the hole they’d blown in the wall. As they flew toward the compound, he saw people crossing the massive bridge over the dam, running from the northern part of the wall. There were so many of them that they were preventing forces from moving over from the southern side. He saw fighting in the streets, red-armored guards against Elvarr in black and Rzan in gold. There were mages down there, slinging spells at each other. He saw formations of red guards from the south marching toward the bridge. He even spotted the Archmage near a wall that held one side of the bridge. He wondered how she’d gotten there so fast, but put it out of his mind as he noticed something else.
